Belarus, Poland to develop joint management plan for Belovezhskaya Pushcha

Belarus and are going to work out a joint management plan for the world heritage sites in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Vasily Arnolbik, Deputy Director General for Science of Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, told reporters on June 11. 

According to him, it would be made for a sustainable development of the natural landscapes of the forest. The uniform strategy will be developed in 2010. 

Various research in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha has been conducted for 200 years. Belovezhskaya Pushcha is one of the world’s oldest reserves. The forest was first mentioned in the Hypatian Chronicle in 983. In 1409, the forest was named Belovezhskaya Pushcha. In 1992, Belovezhskaya Pushcha was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The forest received the status of the biosphere reserve in 1993 and the key ornithological territory of the international importance in 1998. The length of the national park is sixty kilometres from north to south and ten to fifty kilometres from west to east. The area totals 163,505 hectares.
