The German business community is showing interest in Belarus’ woodworking industry, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Germany Andrei Giro told reporters on 13 July, BelTA has learnt.

The diplomat noted that the bulk of German investments in Belarus is channeled into mechanical industry, power engineering and processing of agricultural produce. “We have recently noticed an interest in our woodworking industry,” Andrei Giro said.

In his words, Germany has been one of Belarus’ major trade and economic partners among the EU member states. “The economic expansion of Germany and its GDP growth lead to an increase in our exports to this country,” the diplomat said.

In 2011 Belarus’ exports to Germany reached a record high of $1.8 billion ($0.5 billion if supplies of oil and oil products are not included). “This year, unfortunately, the German economy does not demonstrate robust growth. Therefore, our exports somewhat shrank, but the situation is not critical,” Andrei Giro said.

The diplomat noted that besides trade and economy Belarus and Germany actively promote humanitarian contacts.
