BMZ presents GRI-based corporate social report

The Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ trademark) held the public hearings on the 2008 corporate social report.

BMZ is the first in Belarus to present the social report based on the GRI standards and to invite general public for the hearings, said Liudmila Istomina, UNDP coordinator of economy and social development projects.

BMZ signed Global Compact in September 2008 thus joining the initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation. The company was awarded the certificate then. The participants of Global Compact are expected to prepare a corporate social report within two years. BMZ made the report during a year. According to Liudmila Istomina, BMZ assumed high social responsibility alongside the world’s largest brands.

The UN Global Compact Initiative was presented in Belarus on 20 December 2006. Belarus’ Global Compact National Network was created in March 2007. Around 70 companies and business-associations in Belarus joined the Global Compact.

Founded in 1984, Belarusian Steel Works is an export-oriented company delivering its products to more than 50 countries. BMZ manufactures cast sections, rolled sections, profiled iron, reinforcing bars, metal cord and other kinds of wire. In July 2007 the company launched the seamless hot-rolled pipe production.
