IMF outlines economic recovery scenarios for Belarus

The IMF has suggested several economic recovery scenarios for Belarus, Head of the IMF mission in Belarus Chris Jarvis said as he met with Belarusian Premier Mikhail Myasnikovich on 13 June.

The IMF mission is completing its work in Belarus. Chris Jarvis thanked representatives of the National Bank of Belarus, government, other agencies for effective work and cooperation. “We held a lot of meetings with the Belarusian government and the National Bank, held talks with representatives of commercial banks, independent economists and diplomats. Now we have a clear idea of the current economic situation in Belarus,” the IMF representative said.

“We were able to suggest several scenarios for economic recovery which might be useful for Belarus,” Chris Jarvis said.

In his words, the sides are currently in talks over a new IMF program for Belarus. “After the return to Washington, we will continue cooperation at the level of technical specialists of Belarus and the IMF as well as via IMF Permanent Representative in Belarus Natalia Kolyadina,” Chris Jarvis noted.

In turn, Mikhail Myasnikovich proposed to discuss a number of key issues of cooperation with the IMF in order to develop a coherent program of action for the future. “I think we will discuss the quality of implementation of all recommendations which were outlined by the mission last time, coordinate positions for the next period. We will also discuss those issues that are related to our application for a new program and stabilization loan,” Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed. Despite the fact that these issues are not within the purview of this mission, they were touched upon in the course of its work.

“Being a full member of the IMF, Belarus can count on some support in difficult times,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.
