Belarus, Poland to protect transboundary waters jointly
Belarus and Poland are expected to sign the intergovernmental agreement on rational use and protection of transboundary waters, BelTA learned from Alexander Rachevsky, head of the international cooperation department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus.

The preparation of the draft agreement was discussed during a visit of a Polish delegation to Minsk last week.

The document is expected to be inked in 2011. It foresees the development and implementation of the joint measures aimed at using, restoring and protecting the transboundary water bodies of the Western Bug River Basin. “We plan to cooperate in the protection and use of the rivers and lakes of the Grodno and Brest oblasts, the development of the Augustow Canal,” Alexander Rachevsky said. The agreement envisages the formation of the integrated system to monitor water basins, the organization of joint research of water eco-systems’ state, the use of the up-to-date technologies to prevent pollution and etc. The ecologists of both the countries will study the quality of transboundary waters.

Belarus has already concluded similar agreements with Russia and Ukraine. The Belarusian-Russian-Latvian agreement on the joint measures to protect water bodies of the Western Dvina River Basin is being drafted now. The similar document is expected to be signed with Lithuania
